On Thursday I had my 20-week ultrasound. I wasn't going to do it but Dr. Bauer convinced me that it would be selfish of me not to. The first ultrasound cost me $500 and so I thought I could pretend that it was 1980 and forgo the second ultrasound...saving me a couple bucks. She reminded me that you can't find placenta previa without an ultrasound and that midwives are supposed to deliver low risk births. She's pretty much the only reason is that I went. What I thought was going to be a half-hour routine 20-week ultrasound was an hour and 20 minute exhausting fetal ultrasound. I had a hard time sleeping the night before the ultrasound which is not uncommon for me these days. I woke up with a really bad belly ache that lasted the entire day. I felt like I was going to have diarrhea all day but I didn't. When the sonographer first put the camera on my belly you could hardly see the baby. I asked the girl where my placenta was and she said that I had both anterior and posterior placenta on top and bottom. I didn't ask her to explain because I know that she's not a radiologist but I was really confused by this answer. There was so much tissue on the screen it was hard to find/see the baby. Plus the baby was not very cooperative moving its arms in front of its face, rolling over, and all out hiding from the camera. It took the sonographer quite a long time to get the images she needed. Two things happened towards the very end of the ultrasound. The first was slightly shocking and I will be asking my Midwife about it this week. At one point I was asked to move on my side in an effort to helo find the baby...after moving (and taking a quick potty break) the sonographer was shocked to see that I was having what she called a placental contraction. I've never heard of it and Google isn't giving me much answers. She said that was why my placenta looked posterio AND anterior and that I only have ONE placenta that is anterior. At this point there was much more room on the screen and you could see baby much better. The second thing that happened was as she was finishing up her she said to me, look at his little hand. There was a long pause and awkward silence between the two of us and I just let it be. We did not want to find out the gender but the sonographer may have inadvertently told us. I told Nate and the girls and they're all extatic about the possibilities of having a little brother :)
Mommy and Gwyn date. Today I took Gwyn to run some errands and then surprised her with a mommy/Gwynnie date. We went shopping at second chance and got a treat at Woods Coffee before going for pedicures. I let her get the full meal deal and she got a back massage in the chair. She thought it was pretty awesome!
Jessica and I also got in a good run this morning. We logged 4 miles off Barkley Blvd and it was lovely. Jessica did an 8 mile run the day before as she's preparing for a half marathon. Did I mention she's 24 WEEKS PREGNANT?!! Amazing! This will probably be one of my last runs as my belly and bobs are really starting to take over my body. Nate and the girls and I have been walking during the week with is great! I've gain four pounds so far and I'm trying to keep it around 10lbs total. I started out ten pounds heavier than I did with Gabby and I really could use to loose some weight rather than gain!! I'm working hard.
